The Hong Kong stock market has been on an upward trajectory. Last year, the Hang Seng Index rose by 18%, and this positive momentum has continued into 2025. In the first half of this year, the Hang Seng Index has cumulatively increased by 20%, more than 4,000 points, marking the largest first – half increase in terms of points in history. Stock market trading has become even more active, and the new – share market is bustling. In the first half of the year, a total of 42 initial public offerings (IPOs) were completed, raising over HK$107 billion, which is about 22% more than the total for the whole of last year, temporarily ranking first globally. The market generally has high expectations for the performance of the Hong Kong stock market and the new – share market in the second half of the year. Exchange Traded Products (ETP) are one of the models that facilitate product innovation and have become a major force supporting the liquidity of the Hong Kong stock market in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You may not be very familiar with the abbreviation ETP, but you’re probably no stranger to one of its main products, Exchange Traded Funds (ETF). The Tracker Fund of Hong Kong is a well – known example in Hong Kong. Currently, the assets anchored by ETPs listed in Hong Kong include stocks, fixed – income products, commodities, currencies, and even digital assets. The asset sources cover the Chinese mainland, the United States, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and South America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ETPs allow issuers greater flexibility in choosing underlying assets, structuring product returns, and managing risks. This enables them to better capture investors’ interests and risk – hedging needs and continuously launch new products to meet the ever – changing market trends. For example, in March this year, Hong Kong welcomed Asia’s first batch of single – stock “Leveraged & Inverse Products,” which track popular US stocks such as NVIDIA, Tesla, Coinbase, and MicroStrategy. These products not only enrich the market ecosystem but also provide more short – term trading and hedging tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are currently more than 210 ETP products listed in Hong Kong. As of May this year, the total assets under management of related ETP products were close to HK$510 billion, an increase of about 30% compared to 2020. The average daily trading volume during the same period has increased significantly by five times, reaching about HK$40 billion. It’s worth noting that even though the investment atmosphere has been volatile in the past few years, the Hong Kong ETP market has maintained a growth trend. The proportion of ETP trading volume in the overall market has increased from less than 5% five years ago to about 17% in the first five months of this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the ETP category, ETFs, which are well – known in the market, have also seen continuous new developments. For example, the world’s fifth – largest ETF listed in the US with assets under management of over US$300 billion chose to list in Hong Kong in February this year to expand its investor base and increase trading volume. On the other hand, Asia’s first batch of ETFs linked to spot digital assets were also listed in Hong Kong last year. As of June this year, the asset scale of digital asset ETPs listed in Hong Kong reached HK$4.7 billion, a 74% increase compared to the same period last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Hong Kong Stock Exchange is actively promoting the listing of more ETFs with different themes, such as innovation and technology, climate change response, renewable energy, and biotechnology. This will not only meet investors’ interests and risk appetites but also more effectively guide funds to promote the high – quality development of the real economy. We hope to better leverage global market resources through more institutional and product innovations to consolidate and enhance Hong Kong’s position as the preferred ETP hub in the Asia – Pacific region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We will also strengthen the promotion of the Hong Kong financial market to overseas markets, so that overseas investors can better understand and focus on Hong Kong’s advantages, development opportunities, and potential. This week, I will visit Seoul, South Korea, to introduce the latest developments in the Hong Kong market, including listing and fundraising, ETPs, and digital assets, to local fund managers, institutional investors, and financial institutions. In fact, South Korean investors’ interest in the Hong Kong financial market has been increasing recently. For example, in February this year, their investment in the Hong Kong stock market reached a three – year high. This visit will further increase their interest in and participation in the Hong Kong market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition to the financial market, Hong Kong has a superior business environment, which has been confirmed by many international indicators and surveys recently. It is very suitable for foreign enterprises to use it as a platform to expand their businesses in the Guangdong – Hong Kong – Macao Greater Bay Area and Southeast Asia.
