A Hidden Gem in Shenzhen: A Glimpse of Europe
Hey there, foreign friends! I’m excited to share with you a wonderful travel destination in Shenzhen that feels like a slice of Europe right in the heart of China.
In August 2020, I embarked on a 3 – day trip to Shenzhen’s Overseas Chinese Town East (OCT East) with my family, and it was an absolute delight. With a per – person budget of around 500 yuan, we had a blast experiencing the charm of this place.
OCT East and Its Attractions
OCT East is a place that combines natural beauty with a strong European flavor. There are several amazing spots here, such as the Daxingxing Temple, Dameisha Beach, the Heifeide Town, the Wetland Garden, and the Chaweng Ancient Town.
One of the highlights is the Interlaken Town. Named after the charming town of Interlaken in the Swiss Alps, it perfectly replicates the Swiss pastoral style. The architecture here is so authentic that you’ll feel like you’ve been transported straight to Europe without even leaving China. The buildings are romantic and elegant, and it’s truly a feast for the eyes.
Interlaken Hotel: A European Retreat
The Interlaken Hotel in OCT East is a gem. We took a hitch – ride from Guangzhou and reached the hotel in about 2 hours. As soon as we entered the hotel lobby, we were greeted by the chirping of birds and a beautiful floral display. It was like stepping into a paradise.
The hotel is themed around Switzerland and is located next to the Chaxi Valley Scenic Area. The rooms are spacious and bright, with comfortable beds that make you feel right at home. The large balconies overlook a serene lake. In the morning, you can wake up to the sound of birds singing and enjoy the peaceful view of the lake. It’s like living in a fairytale.
The atmosphere here is one of harmony with nature. Although the large flower fields that were open before the pandemic are currently closed, the overall environment still exudes a strong Nordic – Swiss charm. You can feel like a noble lady enjoying a quiet and peaceful time.
The Beauty of Interlaken Town
Both in the morning and in the evening, the Interlaken Town is incredibly beautiful. The gentle sunlight bathes the town, and black swans glide gracefully on the water. It’s a dreamy and surreal scene.
Dining and Entertainment
The Interlaken Coffee Shop, located by the Interlaken Lake, offers all – day dining. Sitting here, you’ll feel like you’re having a break on a European street. The open – kitchen provides a wide variety of classic dishes. You can enjoy your breakfast or dinner while watching the pigeons flying around and the children watching the koi fish by the lake. The black swans might even swim closer as if to join in the fun.
Other Attractions in OCT East
- Tea Valley Trans – train: Taking the small train around the OCT East Hotel area is a must – do. You’ll pass through the woods, hear the sound of the wind in the leaves, and enjoy the beautiful scenery of mountains and lakes. It’s a 40 – minute journey that makes you feel at peace with the world.
- Grand Canyon: The Grand Canyon in OCT East is full of exciting amusement rides. The “Rapid River Ride”, “Jungle Shuttle”, and the wooden roller – coaster are the main attractions. If you’re brave enough, you should definitely give them a try. You’ll speed through the valleys and hills, disappearing into the forest one moment and soaring above the clouds the next. There’s also a small zoo where you can see cute raccoons, flamingos, squirrel monkeys, and enjoy amazing bird shows.
- Hot Springs: In summer, the hot springs here are a great way to detoxify and rejuvenate. With an area of 20,000 square meters of mountain – lake green space and more than 20 hot springs, you can choose from different types like milk baths, red – wine baths, wormwood baths, and sea – salt baths. The hot springs are open from 14:00 to 23:00, and hotel guests can get special discounts. You can even watch a spectacular steel – flower show while soaking in the outdoor swimming pool.
Practical Information
The best way to get to OCT East is by self – driving. It’s located in Dameisha, Yantian District, Shenzhen.
